Batch Management in Retail Stores

Grocery Retailers in India are finding it challenging in handling batch numbers for the SKU's they carry in their stores. As the volume of business increases, the count of stores and the count of SKUs, the retailer handles are also increasing tremendously. Retailers are finding it hard to control the shelf life of a SKU kept on the shelf. Since the FIFO process in the store is quiet manual, the task of following the queuing procedure for batch numbers has left to the mercy of the store personnel. Being spent a quality amount of my tenure in Retail, I really get furious when I find an expiry stock still lying on the shelf.
During my last store visit, i picked up a Maggi Masala Noodles and proceeded towards billing. Being a retailer myself, I have turned the pack to look into the manufacturing date of the product( Old habits die-hard!!!). I was shocked to see that the product i am carrying is already expired 15 days back.Being such a fast moving product, I would have never expected Maggi Noodles to be expired and still lying on the shelf. Having shopped in such a store, I would never want to revisit that store in my life time.

  1. I totally agree with Anil's view on batch management. Emphasis and relevance of batch management is increasing. This is not just important for grocery since we have a perish-ability in the picture. But we can see batch management as a strategic advantage in not just grocery but even in the durables, say for example that could be a product recall scenario for electronics. Success of product recall lies on batch identification then reaching your customers and effective communication.
With efficient batch management adopted in the organisation that can prove as good crisis mitigation plan as well. Batch management needs radical transformation to become string to pull up for business needs.

  2. Batch Mangement should not just be seen from tactical stand point. Batch management with properly aligned CRM would really give a strategic advantage as well. This is very evident in the case of product recalls.
Success of product recall lies with identification of customer, in most of the cases that would need lot of money for making the customer aware that his product needs replacement. This problem is bigger challenge than the product quality. With better Batch management and CRM in place such crisis can be handled effectively and could even earn some goody points from customers.
